From paperwork to people in just nine weeks

HumanTotalCare puts AI to work for better occupational care giving, doctors faster access to critical case insights.

HumanTotalCare is committed to doing more for working people in the Netherlands. Through its various brands, including ArboNed, HumanCapitalCare, Mensely, and Focus, the organization supports more than 64,000 employers and 1 million workers with the help of 2,000 professionals.

IT&Care develops and manages integrated, web-based software applications that support employers, employees, company doctors, and consultants in the areas of work, vitality, and health. This generates a wealth of knowledge and data. Leveraging these insights, the Research & Development (R&D) department continuously improves and innovates its services, including through the use of AI.

The guiding principle is that AI should be used carefully and in a human-centered way, not as an end in itself, but as a tool. AI is not intended to replace the human element; rather, it should support and enhance it.

Successful AI adoption must deliver value for both company doctors and working people. HumanTotalCare achieves this through a rigorous innovation process that tests what works, what adds value, and how AI can be applied safely in real-world settings.

Preparing for consultations with AI-powered support

A recent pilot explored how AI can help company doctors prepare for consultations by providing concise summaries of key medical information, enabling them to enter each conversation better informed and better prepared.

Before meeting with an employee, company doctors need a clear overview of the most relevant medical information, including the cause of absenteeism, the course of illness, and the employee’s current situation. Having this information readily available helps them prepare effectively and ask more targeted questions during consultations. In turn, a structured summary of the employee’s absenteeism journey contributes to more consistent, high-quality care.

To support this need, HumanTotalCare decided to develop a Gen AI application that summarizes an employee’s absenteeism journey. The first step was to create a Proof of Concept (PoC) to understand how AI-generated summaries could best support company doctors while also testing the infrastructure required for Gen AI solutions.

With IT&Care and its Research & Development (R&D) department, HumanTotalCare already possessed significant in-house IT expertise. However, developing a new Gen AI application required additional specialist knowledge and development capacity. This was particularly important because the solution processes privacy-sensitive employee data and must comply with regulations such as the GDPR and the EU AI Act. As a result, security and compliance were critical requirements from the outset.

Beyond developing the application itself, HumanTotalCare wanted to establish a scalable platform capable of supporting both current and future Gen AI applications. To achieve this, the organization sought an experienced AI development partner.

Partners in AI

Thanks to its strong technical foundation, HumanTotalCare quickly recognized Sogeti as the right partner, bringing both AI development expertise and deep Gen AI capabilities. In just nine weeks, HumanTotalCare and Sogeti developed a Minimum Viable Product (MVP): the AI Summarizer for company doctors.

The application uses a Large Language Model (LLM) to generate concise summaries of employee absenteeism cases based on medical records. The AI Summarizer was developed and deployed on Azure AI Foundry.

Co-creation with company doctors

Developing both the application and the underlying infrastructure required close collaboration. To ensure AI was implemented responsibly and in a human-centered way, the project team remained closely connected to day-to-day medical practice.

R&D consultants, IT specialists, Sogeti experts, and company doctors worked together throughout the development process to create a solution that was both technically robust and operationally valuable. Because the content and clarity of the summaries were critical, company doctors were actively involved in testing and refining the application. Their feedback helped shape and fine-tune the AI Summarizer to meet real-world needs.

Security and compliance (GDPR and EU AI Act)

HumanTotalCare and Sogeti prioritized security and regulatory compliance throughout the project. To protect privacy-sensitive data, the LLM does not store any employee information.

In addition, the Azure AI Foundry infrastructure operates within HumanTotalCare’s secure business environment and is hosted in European Union data centers. Access is protected through single sign-on (SSO) and strict authorization controls. These security measures applied not only to end users but also to developers, cloud architects, and the test panel of company doctors during the development phase.

The result: Better care today and a foundation for tomorrow

Beyond ensuring secure data handling, the project aimed to deliver meaningful value in practice. The results from the initial pilot have been highly encouraging.

By providing a clear and structured overview of employee cases, the AI Summarizer enables company doctors to begin consultations better prepared. The tool also simplifies case transfers between practitioners and reduces the risk of overlooking important information through standardized summaries.

HumanTotalCare now has a strong foundation for further expansion. The organization possesses both the technical platform and the internal expertise required to continue enhancing the solution. Plans are already in place to extend the AI Summarizer and make it available to all company doctors.

Because the platform is scalable, HumanTotalCare can also develop and deploy additional AI-powered applications in the future, helping the organization do even more for working people across the Netherlands in a safe, effective, and cost-efficient manner.

Sogeti’s Impact at HumanTotalCare

  • 9-Week MVP Delivery: Co-created and delivered a production-ready AI Summarizer in just nine weeks.
  • Trusted AI by Design: Implemented a secure, GDPR- and EU AI Act-aligned solution with zero data retention by the LLM.
  • Continuous Innovation Enablement: Established a foundation for ongoing enhancements through iterative AI development.
  • Scalable AI Platform: Built an Azure AI Foundry-based platform capable of supporting future AI applications at scale.
